It depends on the person and the tan.  Some people fade very quickly, others maintain their tan for a while.

Personally, being one of the most pale people on the planet, I've hardly ever tanned.  Scorched is more like it.  Remember that tanned skin is technically damaged skin and therefore, very dry.  Moisturize regularly and it will probably fade a little quicker.

For me, any tan that darkens my skin that much lasts for months.  When I was a child, I'd often have a week or two in the sun on summer vacation, plenty of it spent in a bathing suit (where I lived, it was rarely warm enough for outdoor swimming and there was no place to do it, so that was only on vacation)--and the outline of the bathing suit straps would be visible on my skin til around Christmas.  When I spent a couple weeks of that vacation with relatives in Florida, my skin turned about a shade darker, and it took at least six months to get pale again.

Depends on the person but how about getting some sunless at home tanner (tan in a bottle) so that when it starts to fade you can apply it and it will appear to last longer?

I don't know what my skin's deal is but, im pasty pasty pale normally, however get me in the sun and I go brown straight away, not red.  It takes extremes for me to go red and even so, it usually lasts a few hours then its over.  What does that mean? I tend to stay tanned for about a month after i have stoped being in the sun.
