Homemade lipgloss/balm?
May 14th, 2007 at 10:23am

Hi guys just wanted to ask if anyone has any recipes or ideas on how to make lipgloss or lipbalm at home, because it's cheaper and fun to make. Any tips appreciated!

the simplest i know that works good is to apply honey on your lips. try not to lick it off.

Actually, I never liked vaseline; it coats your lips rather than allowing your lips to absorb in the moisture. That's why after you use commercial lip balms, you have to apply more later.

Honey locks in moisture--add a bit of your favorite essential oils like peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender, tea tree oil (good for healing cold sores) until you find something you like.

i know this is an old old old thread.  however i think a bit of honey, something like a drop of essential oil, and a pinch of geletin.  you heat up the honey so it is hot, not burning, but hot enough that it moves like water.  then add the geletin, stir until disolved, if it cools too much before the geletin is disolved then reheat.  after that is done mix in your essential oil.  put into the fridge to help the geletin soilidify, then voila, a lipbalm that is good for you.

This recipe here is the one I use everytime its like the same one's in stores.... I even make this one for friends at christmas time.

1 teaspoon coconut oil(the cream)
1 teaspoon almond oil
1/2 grated beeswax

mix all 3 together and melt ingredients for 1 to 2 min in microwave and stir... watch closely when in microwave cause it starts to  pop in mirowave.

Then after its out mix them you can add color to it food coloring is fine it works, and then id add a few drops of scent maybe vanilla, or watermelon something that would be good for your lips not floral scents that would be more for a perfume.

After you do that make sure you have a lip gloss jar 1 or 2 and pour it in bottle give about 5 to 10 min to start harden a good trick is to put it in refrigerator to let it harden quickly then you have your lip gloss.
hope this helps!

Oh, thanks, but I meant how much beeswax do you add to the mixture... the recipe says '1/2 grated beeswax' but 1/2 what? Tablespoon or teaspoon?

It's been a LONG time since I have visited this site so please excuse me while I play catch-up on some seriously older posts, LOL. Firstly, never use petrolium jelly. It's a by product of fuel (gasoline) making and is known to cause cancer. Any recipe you find that call for it-try this instead. It's UNpetrolium jelly
1 ounce beeswax
1/2 cup grapeseed oil or sweet almond oil
place in microwave safe dish & heat until completely melted. It won't take long so watch it carefully!
You can use it as is or add a little flavor to it. I prefer to add 6-8 drops of cinnamon leaf oil for lip plumping (per little plastic pot I put it in). You can add more cinnamon leaf oil just becareful cuz it can burn

Here's a few good recipes of my own to get ya started:
Almond Honey Lip Balm (Makes alot!)
8 ounces Sweet Almond Oil
1.2-2.5 ounces of beeswax ( the more you add the harder the product)
1 TBS Honey
Carefully melt & blend all ingredients, pour into pots & let cool. TIP: place caps on pots but do NOT screw on! This helps reduce moisture, keep contaminates out and lets it cool. Since this is such a big recipe I use this one for gift giving.
Cocoa Mint Lip Balm
.25 ounces beeswax
.33 ounces Shea Butter
.33 ounces Cocoa Butter (unrefined-you want that chocolate scent!)
.40 ounces Sweet Almond oil
10 drops Peppermint EO (essential oil)
Melt and blend everything then add the EO right before pouring into pots
Moisturizing Lip Gloss
2 TBS UNpetroleum jelly ( I added the recipe elsewhere)
1Tsp Honey
Flavoring to suit your tastes
You can even add micro-glitter so long as it's made for bath/body products!
Your Flavor Lip Gloss
(have fun with this one!
Unpetroleum Jelly
Kool Aid (sugared powder or Lik-m-aid candy powder!) Add to suit your tastes!
