My friend at uni has a gum shield she sleeps in. I've noticed that I've started grinding cause I'll wake up with clenched teeth...lol.

Also, do you have headaches when you wake up? That's a sign that you do indeed grind your teeth.

lol yeah that same thing happened to me. i kept waking up in the middle of the night with my teeth clenched, and as i was falling asleep, i was consciously trying to stop but i'd later on wake up clenched once again... i think the shield would be good. maybe my old sparring mouthpiece until i get   a good one? lol

I've had this same problem. I used to grind when i was younger, but it went away when I was about 10. It came back about a yr or yr and 1/2 ago and it was worse. i constantly clench my teeth during the day and i grind so bad at night that i wake ppl up in different rooms. I get terrible migranes and jaw pain. I went to my dentist and he said it was stress and is having a nightguard made for me. For the meantime, I got a cheap 1 from the store and it doesnt stop the griding, it just makes it so i dont damage my teeth. I am wondering how do I stop the clenching. I honestly do not know how to relax my jaw.  So if anyone has any suggestions, please put them out there. Thanks!

^I read that its mostly due to stress too so relax and your jaw will follow Grin

I saw a commercial for this over the counter mouth guard thing that you dont need a doctor's prescription or w.e to get. It doesnt fix the problem completely but it prevents the bad effects it can have on your teeth, tongue and cheeks.

i clench my teeth constantly. i jused to wear a night guard but i kape spitting it out in the middle of the night and i would end up waking up to a wet pillowcase and this disgusting plastic thing that i would then have to clean again with hair attached. sounds oh so fun.

Nightguards are not very attractive things but they do save your teeth.  What would you prefer - ground down stumps or wearing the nightguard?  I've been wearing one for years because I have some dental work I don't want to grind into.  I don't like it but it does make for a better nights sleep.  You need a soft one and it has to fit properly.    It needs to be replaced every so often.

I know someone in their forties who has been grinding years and her teeth are now so damaged she needs 8 crowns.   They are jagged and cracked from it.    I know someone else who is in their late twenties and she had the most beautiful teeth which are getting shorter and shorter because she hates wearing a guard.  it's such a shame.

annie, why do you say 'you need a soft one' ?
there are hard ones.
soft plastic leeches out into your mouth more and is swallowed.
some plastics disrupt hormones and are bad for you.

A soft one is much easier to get used to.  I had a hard one at first but it made my jaw ache because when I clenched into it the roots of my teeth would get sore.   With a soft one I find I sleep really deeply and my jaw does not feel all tense in the morning.  If it is well made of decent plastic then it should not leak.  I've not felt any ill effects from this.  I probably have more ill effects from having amalgam fillings and some root canals.

besides which I don't think a hard plastic one would necessarily leak fewer molecules than a soft one.  Depends on it's structure.

Hi!

If you continue to grind/clench your teeth, you will wear down your teeth and will have massive pain .. I would recommend checking out in purchasing a non-expensive One-Size fits all mouth guard.

One-Size Mouth Guards (night, sports, general, etc.) are definitely a viable option, if you are experiencing grinding, clenching, or bruxism. I would recommend checking out totalgard.com - They have some great night guards that eliminate the issues I mentioned earlier. They are a proven distributor online and everyone seems satisfied with the company. Their night guards range from $5.95-24.95. Custom mouth guards from your doctor can range from $300-500+ .. I hope this helps!

Actually, grinding teeth is the symptom that your stomach has lot of germs in it. So, it is time you visit a general physician and get a stomach cleaning medicine.  Smiley

Teeth grinding or Bruxism - abnormal grinding, clenching, and gnashing of the teeth - has been observed in cases of parasitic infection. These symptoms are most noticeable among sleeping for children. Bruxism may be a nervous response to the internal foreign irritant.

So I suggest, before doing anything try sending a sample of feces for parasitic test.

Quest, I think that's bogus, don't scare people!  My brother had it as a child.  It's called TMJ syndrome.  He is 22 and doesn't do it any longer.  As my folks dental insurance didn't cover it, they had to use their health insurance to see a chiropractor.  He kept adjusting my brother and it did seem to work for him.  Good luck!

KimmieA, The sign is not specific and exclusive for children but it is MORE NOTICEABLE  in them:

Teeth grinding: Bruxism is the abnormal grinding, clenching, and gnashing of the teeth, often observed in cases of parasitic infection. This is more noticeable in children, especially at night, and may be a nervous response to an internal foreign irritant. In "conventional" medical material, they still maintain that the cause of this remains unknown and controversial.

My apologies.  I was only going from what the doctor told us.  Perhaps you have a different source.  Smiley  I just know that neither he nor my aunt had parasites.  I didn't mean for my statement to be mutually exclusive.  Both of theirs went away with chiropractic care.  It was covered by health insurance, and not Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login Login or Register Register .  I really just wanted to make note of that.

Hi,
Dentists say that it happens because one's teeth are not properly aligned with each other. There are quite a few reasons why people grind their teeth. If it so happens that you are suffering from severe complications of teeth grinding like jaw problems, he could refer you to a doctor to address the symptoms. Once the complications are all taken care of, the dentist can perform the treatment procedure required to eliminate teeth grinding.
