Body Mists
Dec 14th, 2006 at 4:56pm

I have been asked to create some body mists for a friend to sell in her online shop.  It is new so she will probably only sell a couple a month.  I would like to know (keeping it as natural as possible) what preservative and emulsifier would you recommend using?  the site is heavily weighted towards parenting so I dont want to use alcohols etc.

I have only made these for personal use so I havent had to worry about preservatives etc.

Any ideas?  Please? Undecided

Thank you for your help.  I t is the preservative thingy which most bothers me.  Because these items will be for sale as opposed to my personal use I think I will have to put in some type of preservative.  At this stage they can be made in small batches as her business is new and we don't know how they will sell, but they will obviously have to last at least 6 months without going horrible.

From what I understand the vodka base is not for prervation of the oils but the dissolutoin of them and holding of scent.  How long (if stored properly) will items made to these recipes last before spoiling?

Preservatives
Biopein / Neopein
Innovative broad-spectrum preservative, recently released by Bio-Botanica, Biopein (now replaced by Neopein) is a proprietary blend of natural plant extracts that effectively protects water-based products from bacteria and fungi. Usage ratio is around 0.3%.

Suttocide A
Sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, 50% aqueous solution. Use at 0.2 to 0.5%. General purpose, broad-spectrum preservative, Suttocide A survives highly alkaline environments, and is therefore particularly suitable for liquid soap.

Uniphen P-23
Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben and Propylparaben. Swiss made, globally approved preservative for leave-on, water-based cosmetic emulsions (similar to Phenonip). Use at 0.5 to 1%.

As for the vodka-I never use it. It's illegal to sale items made with this type of alcohol in the U.S. You can however get Perfumers Alcohol. It can be pricey but it's better than a possible lawsuit. Natural preservatives are great but still fairly short term (average 18 months shelf life depending also on the product) The ones listed are among the best ones I've used.
